10 Questions with Conrad Sewell

Conrad Sewell is headed to Cairns as part of his regional acoustic tour playing The Edge Hill Tavern on Friday the 25th of July celebrating the 10th anniversary of Firestone.

We Caught up with Conrad earlier this week to have a chat.

N- This anniversary tour marks a major milestone in your career—what emotions are you experiencing as you prepare to hit the road again?

CS- Honestly, it’s pretty surreal. I’ve been through so much since Firestone came out. It was the song that truly opened the door for me. Now, a decade later, to be revisiting those early tracks with fresh eyes and a live acoustic twist… it’s emotional, humbling, and really exciting. I feel grateful to still be here, doing what I love.

N-Looking back to when you first started, what moment do you think truly defined your career?

CS-There’ve been a few, but singing Start Again live for the first time and watching the crowd sing it back, that hit different. That was when I realised this wasn’t just about making music. It was about connection. That moment really defined what I wanted this journey to be about.

N-How has your musical style or creative process evolved since your debut?

CS-Back then, I was chasing emotion. Now, I still am, but with more intent. I’ve learned how to dig deeper, to write from a place of honesty, even when it’s uncomfortable. Musically, I’ve moved through pop, soul, R&B but the heart’s always been the same.

N-Can fans expect any surprises on this tour—unreleased songs, special guests, or new arrangements of your classic tracks?

CS-Absolutely. We’ve stripped everything right back, it’s raw, vulnerable. There’ll be some reimagined versions of older songs, a few deep cuts I haven’t played in years, and maybe even a taste of what’s coming next. You never know who might jump up in a regional town or two.

N-What does the concept of an “anniversary” mean to you personally and artistically?

CS-It’s a marker. Not just of time, but of growth. It’s a chance to pause, reflect on where you’ve been, and reconnect with the people who’ve been there through it all. Artistically, it’s about honouring the past while still pushing forward.

N-How do you stay grounded and creatively inspired after years in the industry?

CS-My family keeps me grounded. Creatively, I’ve learned to lean into life. The highs, the lows, the stillness in between, that’s where the songs live. Inspiration’s everywhere if you’re willing to feel it.

N-You’ve had massive international success—what keeps you connected to your Australian roots while performing globally?

CS-Australia is in my blood. The people, the humour, the honesty, it all comes through in how I write and perform. Especially Regional shows, they’re truly my favourite, the connection with the fans in these regional spots is the best part.

N-Are there any songs that feel different to perform now compared to when you first released them?

CS-So many. Firestone, obviously, it carries a whole different weight now. Healing Hands hits deeper too. Time changes how you feel about certain lyrics, especially when you’ve lived through more.

N-What’s one behind-the-scenes moment from tour prep or rehearsals that fans would love to hear about?

CS-There’s a cover that I sing on this tour, and honestly the hours of playing any and everything in rehearsals until finding the right cover to play was a process.

N- What do you hope fans take away from this tour, especially those who’ve followed your journey from the beginning

CS-That the journey’s still unfolding, and that they’ve been a part of every step. I want them to feel seen, to hear these songs in a new light, this tour is for them, as much as it is for me.I’m also super grateful that I get to play them new music.. My unreleased song ‘Walk On’ has been getting such a great reception live.
